 TELEPHONING FROM OUTSIDE THE UNITED
KINGDOM
The international dialing code
for the United Kingdom is 0044. This is often written as
+44. When dialing add
the 0044 code but omit the first zero of the area code.
Thus 01234 567890 becomes 0044 1234 567890.
The number with the international code is usually
written: +44 (0) 1234 567890
VISITING A PUB
GENERAL
An important and defining part
of the English way of life is the pub. Short for public
house, the pub is an essential
part of our culture and our social lives. Other names for
pub are 'Inn' and 'Tavern', and 'Hotel' is often used.
Many of the larger hotels have a bar open to
non-residents.
While some of the pubs in our
larger cities may have a bit of a reputation you will
always find a warm welcome
in Yorkshire Dales pubs where the clientele are less
reserved.
Nearly all the pubs here do
meals at lunchtimes and in the evenings and some serve
food all day. Meals are
often served in the bar 'Bar Meals' and sometimes the pub
will have a separate restaurant (a la carte).
Pub opening times are usually
11:00 in the morning to 23:00 in the evening. Many still
close in the afternoon,
often between 15:00 and 19:00 - a hangover from when pubs
were on restricted hours before 1988. Some pubs
have a late licence thanks to more recent legislation,
often when entertainment is provided, usually a band.
Between 11:00 New Year's Eve until 23:00 New Year's Day
pubs are able to open 36 hours. Residents staying
in a pub are able to purchase and drink alcohol outside
licencing hours.
The legal drinking age is 18.
People over 16 may have an alcoholic drink with a meal
while accompanied with
an adult. People over the age of 14 may enter the bar of
any public house although some pubs may set a higher
age limit such as 16 or 18 but that is uncommon in the
Yorkshire Dales where families are welcome. Some pubs
restrict children to certain rooms.
The legal blood-alcohol limit
is 80 milligrams/100ml of blood as in the Irish Republic
and many U.S. States.
The equivalent for a breath-test is 35 micrograms/100ml
of breath on an evidential breath tester at a police
station. The best advice is do not drink and drive.
Some pubs will have
entertainment, often in the form of a band. Expect
usually a small local outfit playing cover
versions of popular or current hits. Pubs like the Green
Dragon at Hardraw and Tan Hill Inn often host superior
bands sometime playing original music.
STAYING IN A PUB - ROOM
TARIFFS IN PUBLIC HOUSES
It is strongly advisable to
book in advance if you wish to stay in a pub. While it is
possible to turn up on spec
at many pubs during the week, some of the more popular
pubs ar e busy at weekends.
Due to prices changing due to
inflation, it would be impractical to quote prices for
accommodation in individual
pubs listed in this website. Therefore I use the
following terms:
BUDGET - Up to £50 per night, expect shared
facilities.
MID RANGE - £50 - £80 per night, many of the pubs
are in this range.
PREMIUM - £80 - £150 per night, the price you
expect in larger popular pubs and hotels.
HIGH PREMIUM - Over £150 per night such as country
club type hotels.
The prices are for 2011.
Alternatively you can camp
outside or near a pub. Many of the pubs here are within
one mile (1600 metres) of a
campsite while some pubs offer camping with limited
facilities. While April to October is the normal camping
season for most people, winter camping is commonplace
amongst the stalwarts of the Yorskhire Dales such as
band-followers and patrons of the Dales' more interesting
pubs. Camping over the New Year is a popular
activity when pubs are fully booked.
