EMBSAY AND EASTBY
Eastby - The village lock-up at Eastby, often used after a heavy night at the Mason's Arms! Grouped together in a single parish, Embsay and Eastby lie to the north-east of Skipton. Embsay is the larger of the two villages home to two pubs and the western terminus of the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway where Thomas The Tank Engine often visits. The Elm Tree Inn takes it's name from the elm tree that stood in the centre of the junction in the north of the village. It was replaced after the Dutch Elm Disease outbreak of the late twentieth century and in 2007, a new replcaement was planted. Drinks can also be enjoyed at the Cavendish Arms adjacent to the station and in Eastby the Masons Arms which once played host to quarry workers is now a relaxing family pub. The village lock-up opposite the Masons Arms is testimont to wilder nights in years gone by and is typical of many villages in England where drunks and petty offenders may be detained before being brought before a magistrate.
