For a village of it's size, Gargrave has a
lot of history but the pictorial records only date from
the start of the Twentieth century. The Leeds and
Liverpool Canal which runs through Gargrave and is one of
the longest canals in the country brought prosperity to
Gargrave during the Industrial Revoloution. Gargrave Village. |
| The canal was later supplemented by a railway
with a station at Gargrave and today both canal and
railway bring visitors to the village which also has the
advantage of being on the A65 main road from Skipton to
Kendal making it one of the most accessible villages in
Yorkshire. Not far away is Malham Cove. The Post Office, newsagents, fish and chip shop, Indian restaurant, Old Swan Public House and other shops including the local Co-Op and dispensing chemist can be found on the High Street. Nearby is Coniston Cold with it's Hall and the Anchor Inn and Twin Locks Garden Centre. Shops of note are:
