Gargrave High Street

One of the larger villages in this part of North Yorkshire, Gargrave is four miles (7km) from) from Skipton. Here the River Aire and Leeds and Liverpool Canal cross.

Another view of Gargrave For a village of it's size, Gargrave has a lot of history but the pictorial records only date from the start of the Twentieth century. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal which runs through Gargrave and is one of the longest canals in the country brought prosperity to Gargrave during the Industrial Revoloution.

The canal was later supplemented by a railway with a station at Gargrave and today both canal and railway bring visitors to the village which also has the advantage of being on the A65 main road from Skipton to Kendal making it one of the most accessible villages in Yorkshire. Not far away is Malham Cove.

The Post Office, newsagents, fish and chip shop, Indian restaurant, Old Swan Public House and other shops including the local Co-Op and dispensing chemist can be found on the High Street. Nearby is Coniston Cold with it's Hall and the Anchor Inn and Twin Locks Garden Centre.

Shops of note are:

  • Philip Carrol Antiques for pottery, porcelain, English, Continental and Oriental antiques.
  • Dapper Quality Clothing Agency, for ladies wear.
  • Dorothy Ward for merchandise such as glassware, rugs, kitchenware, gifts and accessories.
  • Chapter One Bookshop for various books including local reading and specialist.
  • Ewe Tree for designer knitwear, sweatshirts and shoes.
  • Edible Artwork for cakes for special occasions such as weddings and birthdays.

For light refreshment, try the Dalesman which offers a wide range of hot and cold drinks, home baked food and ice cream. Walkers and cyclists welcome.

Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Gargrave

Seasonal events include giant Easter eggs in the spring, a duck race in the summer and a 'Guys Around Gargrave' trail plus firework spectacular in November. The year is not complete without the lights and Magical Christmas Market in December.
