HELLIFIELD
Further down the road from Long Preston is Hellifield. The nearby railway station gives access to the village by train and a pint can be enjoyed at the Black Horse or the Social Club opposite. Listed in the Domesday Book as Helgeflet, the name of the village changed several times over the centuries with 'Nether Hellifield', 'Hellifield Pele' and 'Hellifield Cochins' being used. Until the Industrial Revoloution, Hellifield was just a small collection of houses but the arrival of the railway in the 19th century saw a boomtime for the village with a depot as well as a staion with connections to Blackburn as well as Skipton and Settle. The line to Blackburn fell victim to the Beeching Axe in the early 1960's. New homes are currently being added to the village, some on the site of the Old Auction Mart. At Christmas, it is said that the over-the-top Christmas decorations which adorn Hellifield's houses could be seen from space. BACK |
