The southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales
is dominated by the two towns of Settle and Skipton and the
villages in between. Both towns plus Long Preston and Hellifield
are easily accessible as they are on the railway network. Settle
is at the southern terminus of one of the most scenic main lines
in the country, running up to Carlisle. Steam trains are often
run on the Settle to Carlisle Railway. Steam enthusiasts do not
have to wait for excursions to Carlisle however as steam trains
are run every Sunday (plus other days in the week during holiday
periods) on the Embsay to Bolton Abbey Steam Railway.
For those who prefer a gentler pace of life, the Leeds and
Liverpool Canal runs through Gargrave and Skipton.
Both Settle and Skipton have all the facilities the holiday maker
requires, pubs, outdoor shops, supermarkets, malls and indoor
sports facilities.
